Describe your company in one sentence. We provide business to business sales, hiring, training and sales management for companies from the small to medium-sized business all the way up to Fortune 500 companies.
What is the work environment like at Acquirent? Lots of high-energy activity. We have a completely open floor plan – myself and my partners sit on the main floor with all of our employees. It is a very open, very collaborative work space. People motivate each other and you don’t have to go very far to get advice!
What is a typical day like at Acquirent? Every single day we have an 8a.m. all-company meeting where we kick the day off and recognize people for closing deals the day before. Then you’ll do calls, maybe sales presentations or ongoing training. A lot of folks go to the gym together during lunch. It varies for each individual and from account to account, but “a typical day is 8a.m. – 5p.m.”
Also, we don’t typically have meetings about meetings. People like that.
What is your favorite thing about your company? We take a lot of pride and excitement and joy from the fact that every day we get to work with people in the early stages of their career – we get to work with them, make them better and help them develop skills that will be useful throughout their careers, at Acquirent or in other roles. We have an impact on others’ careers and that is really rewarding.
How did you get into this field? I grew up in a household where my father and grandfather were salesmen. My grandfather always told me when I was a kid that if I could sell really well I would always have a job. That resonated with me. I look at it as a really exciting way to make money and ultimately, I have control over where I want my career to go.
What characteristics do you look for in job seekers when hiring? We call it the sales DNA. We look for a lot of the typical stuff – people who are competitive, motivated and self-driven. I look for strong creative thinking, oral and written communications skills. There is a lot of problem solving in sales. I also look for people who are highly organized.
Any advice for job seekers looking to work in your industry? Sales is a unique job to interview for – there are many ways to evaluate job seekers. Things like follow-up, the notes you write and how you present yourself throughout the interview process are very important. It’s the little things like proofreading your emails that we notice. Don’t lose sight of the little things.
Where is your field/industry headed? There’s a famous quote from some CEO of the past – “nothing really starts until it’s been sold.” Sales has always been the bread-and-butter, the livelihood of any organization. Technology is evolving the way people make sales. My father had to go and meet his clients face to face because he needed signed contracts. Sales is growing and changing – it is where the really talented college graduates are going to start to migrate.
Where do you see your company in five years? We’ve experienced 195% growth year-over-year for the past three years straight. We made the Inc. 5000 list this year. We are hiring right now, we are going to continue to grow and look at more strategic ways to add services for our clients.
What are some of the things you do for fun when you are not working? I have a 9-month old son named Trip. Fun is really finding time to spend with him and my wife. We travel a bunch to see our families on the East Coast. When the weather is nice I like to get out and play some golf.
How do you want to be remembered? I personally and the company both want to be remembered as a positive influence and a step in someone’s career. We just had our holiday party, and we must have had about 12 alumni come back, and we welcomed them. We know we are going to be for many people a link in the chain of someone’s career, and we want to be a really positive one.
