LevelEleven develops enterprise gamification and CRM solutions that help sales and other managers keep their teams focused on the right things. The company’s flagship product, Contest Builder, is a salesforce.com app that gives companies new ways to motivate salespeople to make more calls, book more meetings, and close more business, which in turn spikes adoption of Salesforce.
Originally developed by digital engagement leader ePrize, Contest Builder debuted at Dreamforce in September 2011 and launched as its own company, LevelEleven, in October 2012. Contest Builder is the #1 most popular gamification app in the Salesforce AppExchange, and clients include Comcast, InsideView, the Detroit Pistons and Dominion Enterprises among many others. LevelEleven is based in Detroit, Michigan, and part of the Detroit Venture Partners portfolio of companies.
Describe your company in one sentence. We build software tools to help keep sales people focused on the right things.
What is a typical day like at LevelEleven? A typical day includes following up on leads that we get or going after new accounts that we think would fit our product. Each person is doing multiple product demonstrations per day, on the computer doing a screen share.
There’s a lot of collaboration, it’s all open air seating, and we all talk to each other about ideas. We’re very focused on making little improvements every day.
What is your favorite thing about your company? That we’re building something. It’s a new idea, and we’re trying to build a whole new industry category.
How did you get into this field? I’ve spent the last 18 years in frontline sales and sales management, and I saw an opportunity about 18 months ago – I implemented Salesforce for my previous employer, ePrize, and I spotted a business opportunity. It was actually an idea developed when I was at ePrize, and we built the beta version there and in mid-October, spun it out to be its own company, LevelEleven.
What characteristics do you look for in job seekers when hiring? People who are comfortable working in a growth environment. Things aren’t always perfectly planned out and organized, and we have to have the attitude that we’re going to figure it out. People have to be comfortable with the instability of an early stage company – not that we are going to disappear, but that things are always changing and we are the ones who are responsible for driving that change. We pay fair rates to get good people, but we are a new company. Some people do better in that environment than others.
Any advice for job seekers looking to work in your industry? Really anybody that wants to enter the enterprise software industry should spend time learning about it. Not everybody grasps this industry, yet it’s a large and rapidly expanding area so we want people who can hit the ground running.
Where is your field/industry headed? Our industry being in the employee motivation space – it’s in the very early stages, mostly around incentive management. We’re adding the concept of consumer engagement, and applying those concepts inside a company. Letting sales people or folks working in a call center know what they should be focused on right now. There’s a lot of attention around it because when a company starts using the software it can seem intimidating – we’re trying to communicate with people in ways they like to be communicated with, like leaderboards and creative messaging.
Where do you see your company in five years? I would envision that we’ve got several different products – right now we have one product, we’re about to launch our second. I think we could have 5-10 products to offer in the next five years.
I see us continuing to be based in Detroit.
How has technology changed or affected your business? Technology drives our company, and most everything functions in the cloud which makes us very efficient. We operate most everything we do within salesforce.com, as well as Google Business Apps, and other relevant software for things like screen sharing, webinars, etc. There are an abundance of business applications that can bolt onto Salesforce and Google, which then allows us to grow and add people efficiently.
What are some of the things you do for fun when you are not working? I’ve got two young kids and a third on the way. I spend a lot of time with my kids and my wife, swimming in the summer, skiing in the winter. Personally I like to exercise; I ski, and play golf and squash.
How do you want to be remembered? Someone that helps make other people better.
