Describe your company in one sentence. We are the largest self storage website in the US and we help people find, compare and reserve self storage.
What is the work environment like at USstoragesearch.com? We have a casual and fun work environment. Even though we were founded in 2004 (with a local start in 2001) we still hold on to some of our start-up ideals. We promote from within and encourage innovation.
What is a typical day like at USstoragesearch.com? In a word, BUSY! The self storage industry is very competitive and our members are constantly looking to keep their listings current with the best prices and specials. Consumers are always looking for the best deal and our call center helps thousands of storage consumers find the best storage deal every month.
What is your favorite thing about your company? USstoragesearch.com loves that we get to build new products to the help the storage industry with making their online marketing efforts easier. As a proven and trusted leader when it comes to marketing in the storage industry we take great responsibility in what we build & develop to ensure it has long-term value to the industry.
How did you get into this field? Collectively the core group had nearly a century’s worth of experience in commercial real estate development and management. We managed one self storage facility in Omaha, NE that was a smaller facility and we struggled to compete, especially since our marketing budget was tiny. This was around the year 2000 and there were little online marketing options for the storage industry. We started a local site to help smaller facilities compete online and in the yellow pages in 2001. By 2004 we abandoned the Yellow Pages portion of our strategy and focused on a nationwide online self storage marketing tool and launched USstoragesearch.com.
What characteristics do you look for in job seekers when hiring? Someone who wishes to grow with us, that we feel will be an integral part of the team for years to come and complements the existing team instead of someone who fits a “mold”. Of course we need someone who has the core skills to fill the position but it is the ancillary attributes that we look at very closely. It is not just can this person fill a particular role but rather what does this person bring to the company on top of the core skills that can help make the USstoragesearch.com team even more talented and unique.
Any advice for job seekers looking to work in your industry? We have grown significantly in the last few years and as such there are openings at every level. If someone is looking to get their foot in the door we have positions to get started – but be prepared to work hard, learn quickly and we will work to find the best use of your unique talents. We also have some midlevel and senior-level positions we are looking to fill. Someone looking for a 9-5 traditional corporate work environment probably is not going to find fulfillment with us. However, if someone is looking for a way to break away from the traditional corporate environment and branch out into new and exciting ventures on a continual basis, we think USstoragesearch.com could be a good fit with you.
Where is your field/industry headed? We think that there will continue to be some consolidation within the industry as well as within the services provided to the industry. The self storage industry is resilient and has proven to be one of the strongest sectors throughout some tough economic times. We think that as outside factors get stronger (housing markets, retail markets, etc.) we will see continued growth in the storage industry and are excited to be a part of that.
Where do you see your company in five years? We see nothing less than continuing to be the largest online marketplace for self-storage as we have been for some time now. With lots of hard work, USstoragesearch.com will continue to be the best site for consumers to find, compare and reserve self storage. At the same time we hope that USstoragesearch.com will become the most important marketing tool in the self storage operator’s arsenal!
How has technology changed or affected your business? As software used at the self storage facility level has become more open it has become easier to offer online reservations of storage units, similar to the way you would book a hotel room or rental car reservation online. USstoragesearch.com has adapted, grown a network of thousands of websites and now can distribute real-time inventory and storage unit information across the network of sites.
How do you want to be remembered? I hope we aren’t “remembered” anytime soon. USstoragesearch.com will continue to evolve and stay current for years to come. We want to be known for always being honest, forthright, fair and innovative.
